So I originally came to Morton Parsons first, between the two of us. I had been looking for another advisor-- switching, and I was invited to a seminar where they had a guest speaker. I was impressed by the attendance and the guest speaker. And then my investment advisor called me up and had a really good conversation.
I was very impressed with his background in terms of his experience in capital markets prior to being in the retail investment side. And so that's when I went and brought my investments over to the team, right? And then Linda, had a different-- she kept hers with her existing investment advisor initially.
Right, so when I got to know Cavin a little bit better is when I was-- we knew, as we were nearing retirement-- I'm not quite retired yet, but we're getting very close-- that we would be consolidating our investments. So I, at that point, started to get to know Cavin a little bit better, we had some meetings, some money I moved with him to see how that would be going. And I think what happened, for me, is-- again, he had a lot of-- Brain had a lot of experience with Cavin.
So I think the one story that comes to mind is when Brian was actually away, it was a Sunday. And the phone rang on a Sunday, and it was Cavin just advising us of what was going on in the market, that he wanted to make sure that we were aware of. So I mean, with that kind of dedication, it helped me make that decision to consolidate our funds with RBC.
And we talk about it regularly. We actually talk about it with our friends. When they're looking for investment advisors, we say, here's what he does for us. We've been very, very happy with him and the team that RBC has put together for us.
The experience with the team has been awesome. They brought us down, they went through everything, they explained the portfolio to us, they used terms that were not only informative, but also meaningful to us. It was really kind of a warm welcome to the DS family.
And our first initial meeting was very good, very relaxing, no pressure whatsoever. And we exchanged some of our financial details with him, and then reconnected about a week and a half later. And that initial meeting, I felt very comfortable right from the get go, just by the way he was presenting the programs to us.
Years ago, we were with a very good company and quite happy with the fellow we had. But after he retired, we weren't so keen on the people that took over. The rapport wasn't there. And you had to call them. Like with Darrell and crew, you don't. So they're a more hands-on crew, and you just feel more comfortable. You don't feel like you're a number with them, you're a person.
12 years ago, we were at the point where we had one third of our portfolio invested with one firm and 2/3 with another firm, which would probably tell you that we weren't all that happy with either firm. So when we first interviewed Cavin, Cavin did an assessment, or a second opinion, if you like, of what we were doing with both of these firms. And we agreed to give him one third of the portfolio as a test. And as a result of terrific performance on the test, we then agreed to give him 100% of the portfolio.
For me, it was I didn't understand or have a good handle on our fees, what our fees were going to be. When we talked with the team here, it was very laid out. This is what I do, this is how we charge. I knew exactly upfront what it was going to be. So that was a comfort level for me, because I don't expect this for nothing, but I also expect-- I don't expect to be gouged at the same time.
