Resolutions

Let's face it - New Year's resolutions are lame. Last year I wrote to you about the concept of making small life-changing resolutions (like flossing or stretching) rather than setting overzealous goals doomed for defeat. I also publically shared with you my top 3 goals for 2017, which I followed through on, almost:

  1. I am now a proud volunteer at Toronto Rehab spending time and sharing my story with those who are learning how to walk again or recovering from a broken neck (or similar injuries). Sometimes we talk about ways to stay positive throughout the recovery process, other times we talk about anything but the injury and most of the time I am just trying to make someone smile.

  1. Despite my awkward hand-eye coordination, I did try to play squash. I’m unbelievably terrible but I’d like to still aim for joining the squash league at my gym so that I am encouraged to play more often. In other sports news, I am a lot less terrible at golf now after a good season with the girls.

  1. I’ve always wanted to take a stand-up / improv class … and still haven’t, so let’s re-add that one back to 2018

I’d love to hear some of your resolutions – please feel free to share so that I may hold you accountable…

Next to getting ‘healthier’, making smarter financial decisions is one of the most popular resolutions we make – and I’d love for one of the 10 financial resolutions below to be included in your list this year.

Here are 10 simple financial resolutions to conquer in 2018 which are sure to enhance your financial health over time:

  1. Simplify your financial life >> Bank online, set up pre-authorized payments & contributions, switch to edocuments, etc
  2. Save taxes with family income-splitting strategies >> Prescribed rate loan strategies, family trusts and business restructuring
  3. Reduce risk and taxes by reviewing the asset mix in your investment portfolio >> Keep more of what you’re earning with tax efficient income
  4. Use credit wisely >> Understanding different rates and tax-deductible perks – apply for it before you need it!
  5. Protect your family’s financial future with adequate insurance >> review life insurance & living benefits – apply for it before you need it!
  6. Ensure your wishes are followed with an up-to-date Will & POA
  7. Ensure your wishes are followed with appropriate account structures & beneficiary designations
  8. Help important Charitable causes achieve better financial health >> consider tax-efficient ways to donate
  9. Get a Family Snapshot® or financial plan prepared >> Complimentary for DS clients
  10. Get educated about special strategies for high net worth families that you may now know about >> You don’t know what you don’t know
