How do you find out your TFSA contribution room?

January 24, 2024

A step by step guide on how to find out your contribution room online and by phone.

By Computer

  • Go to the CRA website – My account for individuals.

  • Scroll down to the sign in area. You can either log in through a sign-in partner (i.e. with your bank information) or login directly through CRA.

  • If you don’t have an account or don't know if you have an account, click on either Sign-In Partner Login or CRA register and follow the registration instructions. If you don't have one, you'll be sent an access code. If you do have one, they'll tell you.

  • After signing in, there is a section on the main screen named ‘Savings and pension plans’, you should see your current TFSA room.

To find "Transaction Summary" - a more detailed breakdown

Following the below steps to gather this extra information confirms if there are any other TFSAs that could affect contribution room.

  • Click “Savings and pension plans” hyperlink as seen above.

  • Scroll down and click “view TFSA details”.

  • Click “Transaction Summary” and retrieve the list of transactions by changing the Start Date to 1/1/2009.

  • Select the "Contributions and Withdrawals" option and click "Search".

  • Sort each account section to show most recent first (Click "Date" twice). This will show the totals at the top of each navy-blue bar.

  • Scroll back up and you will see a "Print/Save" link to the right that will generate a PDF you can share.

By Phone

You need your date of birth, SIN and Line 1500 from last year’s return. You can find that number on your Notice of Assessment.

  • Call 1-800-267-6999, it is an automated system
    • Press 1 (for English)
    • 5 (for Registered Accounts)
    • Then 3 (for TFSAs)
    • Lastly 1 (for room)

Double check!

By the last day of February of the following year, all institutions are required to electronically submit a TFSA record to CRA for each individual who has a TFSA. Because this information is delayed and sent once a year, your TFSA contribution number may not be correct. It is important to review your numbers with a financial professional.

If you disagree with any of the information on your TFSA contribution room report or TFSA Transaction Summary (such as dates, amounts, withdrawals), you need to talk to the institution that holds the TFSA - not CRA.
