Investment process

Our investment process starts with you.

The investment solution is a product of your strategic asset review and financial plan. This is where we look at your business and family dynamics to build a plan to achieve your future goals.

Through this process we determine:

- Your overall asset allocation and risk tolerance

- Current and future tax considerations

- Optimal asset location

With this information, we create an Investment Policy Statement (IPS), which provides guidelines to investing your money. The IPS is signed by your family and our team, and is monitored by a third party to ensure the guidelines are followed.

Investment solution

Our investment solutions are provided on a discretionary basis. This means we can spend more time helping your business and family.

It also allows us to tailor your portfolio and give you better solutions. For example, if you currently hold mutual funds with high gains at another institution, we wouldn't be forced to sell the whole position today.

As a business owner or executive, we are looking to diversify risk out of your business. Instead of going to the private market, we look at the Canadian and US public markets where you have an opportunity to invest in some of the best run companies in the world. We take the perspective of a business owner when building an investment portfolio. This means we seek for companies with the following attributes:

1. A business we understand.

There are close to 4,000 companies listed on the TSX. Many are in industries where we have no expertise or experience. We tend to invest in what we understand.

2. A business building long term competitive advantage.

The companies we invest in tend to be leaders in their fields. In highly competitive markets, we see these companies stick out through their brands, culture, technologies and economies of scale. They are also able to grow through investing and executing high return projects, which in turn grows their competitive advantage. This makes sure that 10 years from now, they will still be a leader in their industry.

3. A business at an attractive price.

We like to buy businesses at attractive prices and stay away from the flavor of the month. Even exceptional companies with high returns of capital will fall out of favor from time to time. We don't mind waiting for these time of volatility to buy.

With the help of the RBC Capital Markets team, we build diversified portfolios with our best ideas.
