A Simple Way to Start a Business

Simple DOES NOT EQUAL easy.

Easy is something that doesn’t require much effort, that you can accomplish without a great deal of concentration or mental energy. For most of us, counting by twos is easy; colouring inside the lines is easy.

Simple describes something that is clear and straightforward, that follows a direct path with evident rules. ‘Easy’ and ‘simple’ may overlap but they’re definitely not the same thing. Losing weight is simple: burn more calories than you ingest. It’s an obvious, logical cause and effect that, when applied consistently, pretty much works in every case. But it’s NOT easy.

When I interviewed Lisa Owen, co-founder of Ottawa’s Rent Frock Repeat on the July 23rd episode of I'm a Millionaire! So Now What? (listen & subscribe here), she described writing down all the simple steps that it takes to start a business. In fact, she still has the original to-do list she created while reading How to Build a Business for Dummies.

But as any successful or unsuccessful entrepreneur will tell you, there’s starting a business and then there’s creating a thriving enterprise that will grow, translate into personal wealth, and make you the next self-made millionaire. Neither starting, nor growing, are easy.

I’ve watched business ownership and entrepreneurship become en vogue lately. Everyone wants to call themselves an entrepreneur. It’s cool. It’s sexy. It has an air of freedom, independence and possibility. But it’s not for everyone. The truth is that it takes grit, perseverance, and determination to evolve a business from a concept or idea to a full-fledged wealth-creation machine.

You’ve probably heard the statistic that only about 50% of new businesses survive through their first 5 years.

Now, we also know, statistically, most millionaires are self made. So entrepreneurship is absolutely a strong path to personal wealth. Although rewarding, business ownership is not for the faint of heart. It’s simple, but not easy.

I’ll be focusing more attention on the Self-Made Nation of business owners and entrepreneurs. Watch this space and join the conversation on I’m a Millionaire! So Now What? as I interview more entrepreneurs, share their inspirational stories, practical strategies, and fun frank advice.

And remember that anyone can take the spirit of entrepreneurship and apply smart, simple business principles to create wealth in their life.

That’s what the Roadmap to Real Riches is about. It’s a roadmap for core personal financial decisions you can implement for yourself, whether you earn a stable salary from a big corporation or you’re running a business and belong to the Self-Made Nation.

The Roadmap to Real Riches works on the simple principle of ‘Think and Act Rich’. This doesn’t mean buying luxury clothing labels and driving fancy cars (although we talk about that too, like in this recent post). It means, simply, spend less than you earn, so you can save and invest now, and ensure your wealth continues to grow. Like I said… simple is not necessarily easy. But when you have your Roadmap to Real Riches, it becomes far easier.

In January of this year (2019), I rolled out a promise to double the number of millionaires in Canada by 2030. I’m doubling down on this mission. I’m dialling up my own grit, determination and perseverance.

So, if you’re ready to do what it takes to become one of the Self Made Nation, please reach out to us for a chat and possibly a formal Prosperity Discovery Session.
