Grit Scholarship: Honoring Perseverance and Inspiring Futures

In memory of my beloved mother, Sotirea Vastis (1944-1991), who faced a six-year battle with breast cancer and left this world too soon, my family decided to take initiative and create a scholarship that embodies the opportunities she never had. This scholarship is a testament to her unwavering support during my athletic pursuits, and it serves as a symbol of her unfulfilled dreams. Named the Sotirea Vastis Grit Scholarship, it aims to empower students who have overcome major challenges, whether physical or mental, and demonstrate remarkable perseverance in their educational journey.

A Trophy of Dreams:

My mother's life took a different path when she immigrated to Canada from a small village in Greece in the 1960s. She worked tirelessly as a maid, seeking a better life for herself and her future family. Despite facing hardships, she never lost sight of her dreams. As a token of her unfulfilled aspirations, she presented me with a trophy that she had won in Greece, representing her greatest success in sports. Little did I know that this trophy, in her eyes, symbolized the dreams she wished she could have pursued further. It became a reminder of her unwavering support and a testament to the sacrifices she made for my own journey.

 

The Sotirea Vastis Grit Scholarship:

To honor my mother's legacy and to provide opportunities for others who have faced similar challenges, the Sotirea Vastis Grit Scholarship was established. For the past six years, this scholarship has been awarded to exceptional female athletes who have demonstrated immense perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. Every applicant's story reveals the trials and tribulations they have endured, be it physical or mental hurdles that could have easily deterred them from pursuing their education. These individuals, driven by their determination and unwavering spirit, truly deserve an edge in their academic pursuits.
