Playing competitive hockey while growing up made Scott an early riser. On off days, he would pass the mornings watching the news. It was there that Scott got the idea to purchase several ounces of silver, which, at the time, showed promise of a value increase (“the Hunt brothers were attempting to corner the silver market,” he recalls). At 10 years old, accompanied by his mother, Scott walked into the bank branch and made his first investment purchase: 10 ounces of silver, funded by redeeming a bond Scott’s grandfather had gifted him. Months later, Scott cashed in the silver at a profit, and he’s been a value investor ever since.
After graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), Scott began his working life as a naval officer and has maintained the ambitious and disciplined mindset he developed in the military: “There is nothing that cannot be done if you put your mind to it and put in the hard work to achieve it,” as he says. Having later earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Business School, Scott went into investment banking. His hard work paid off in a successful career that included senior positions with leading global firms, including RBC Capital Markets, and spanned London (England), Toronto, and Vancouver. Looking back on 13 years of advising corporations on over $60 billion in mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions, Scott says, “Investment banking taught me to get the details right, the value of client relationships, and much about capital markets, companies, and securities.”
In 2009, Scott made the decision to bring his specialized skills to RBC Dominion Securities. Scott stood out among his cohort and soon won the coveted President of the President’s Club title for his strong commitment to client experience and integrity. Leveraging insights and relationships from his prior career, Scott creates a fully custom approach for building, managing, and preserving the financial wealth of each client. Scott is well poised to do so, as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), a Canadian Investment Manager (CIM), and a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI). Scott operates at the most advanced level in the field, holding licenses in securities, options, portfolio management, futures contracts and futures contract options, financial planning, as well as insurance.
Scott is always keen on educating those around him about finance, be it his clients and their children or his own three sons. He has also served as a chair of the Dominion Securities Advisory Board, lending his authoritative and thoughtful point of view to how the firm operates. Scott is committed to giving back to his community, is active politically, and has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Cancer Society, Hollyburn Country Club, Turning Point Recovery Society, and the Vancouver Maritime Museum. In addition, Scott has served on the fundraising committee of Operation Western Front and is a member of Canada Company. Scott and his family live in West Vancouver, and they are members of Hollyburn Country Club and the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. Scott is an avid alpine and nordic skier who enjoys travelling, boating, and reading, as well as playing squash, tennis and golf.
