New Team Member

The McLaughlin Team has grown! We’re excited to introduce our newest member, Jaime Froese. She is serving as our Client Experience Associate, and her role spans an array of providing administrative support to the team, navigating client onboarding, and being the go-to point of contact for our clients and partners.

Driven by her passion for people and 15-years of customer service and executive support, Jaime’s goal is to truly grasp each client’s unique needs, ensuring that they always enjoy an experience that’s not just personalized, but genuinely elevated.

In her spare time you can find Jaime on a hiking trail with her fiancé and dog, or in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes and baking sweet treats.

Tenured Team Members

As we welcome our newest member, I also have the opportunity to celebrate two long-standing team members.

Jan Melnychuk recently hit her 20 year mark at RBC—beginning her journey at the bank and then dedicating the last 17 years with McLaughlin Capital Management. Today Jan is an integral part of the team and a trusted specialist for our clients. I’m pretty sure they trust her a tad bit more than they trust me, and I know that they speak to her more often than to me.

Linda McLaughlin just celebrated a monumental 40 years at RBC Dominion Securities (technically she started at Richardson Greenshields before the merger with RBC DS in 1996). Linda’s extensive career has seen her embrace practically every role the industry has to offer. Her profound wealth of experience and knowledge is not just an asset to us; her advice is sought out by teams nationwide looking to solve problems and optimize their administration.

This Wednesday, we were all able to get out to Gather at Assiniboine Park for dinner (fabulous, by the way) and celebrate Linda's long tenure, significant professional accomplishments, and friendship.

Investment Commentary

The recent events in the Middle East, specifically the aftermath of the Hamas attacks in Israel, resonate deeply with many of us. The impact on innocent Israeli and Palestinian citizens, as seen in countless heart-wrenching stories, is a sobering reminder of the real human cost of conflict. Though we sit here in Canada, the emotional connection to these events is undeniable. As we delve into the economic implications, it is important to acknowledge the heavy toll on lives and communities.

The most recent escalation has had an immediate effect on the markets, with particular focus on oil prices. As investors, it is our job to stay abreast of these developments and their potential impact on our investment strategies. The uncertainty surrounding the situation underscores the importance of maintaining a balanced and diversified portfolio, which is capable of weathering geopolitical turmoil.

This is in the Top 10 of Radiolab episodes of all time, in my reckoning. It is originally from 2013 (I would have first heard it back then), and was released recently. It's a fascinating discussion about the very fast, the very slow, and the speed we live at.
