What are your sources of capital - your secret sauce?

Is it more than financial or your house? Could your most valuable asset instead be sitting atop your shoulders? We invite you to see the richness of YOU through a different lens that is both quantitative and, like most issues facing families, qualitative.

If you would consider the extended digits of your hand as representing the five sources of your family capital -- F.I.S.S.H. (Financial, Human, Spiritual, Social, Intellectual), it seems to be our deeply rooted social scripting and formal education that usually has us seeing the "F" only – and moreover, at the top.

Consider these five sources of capital:

  • Financial capital (F) – How families finance their life and passions: creating, earning, protecting, investing, managing, tax, financial fluency.

  • Intellectual capital (I) – How families learn and govern themselves (education, career choices, coaching/mentoring, governance, roles, responsibilities).

  • Social capital (S) – How families engage and connect with society at large (emotional and financial engagement with society through benevolent or philanthropic actions).

  • Spiritual capital (S) – What does it mean to be a member of the family and what does the family stand for? It could be based on religious beliefs, a set of timeless virtues and values, a cultural heritage and patterns passed down, or any combination thereof.

  • Human capital (H) – What is the ethos of your family members; what are they called to do; how do they interact with other family members.

Family business is not just about the money

As such, we invite you to flip your hand so your thumb is pointing down.

Before there is "F" there is "I.S.S.H.".  "F" can be lost, gained, and lost again as a result of "I.S.S.H.".

Financial capital is thus the byproduct of your other areas of family capital – not the other way around.

Think of "F" as the milk that comes out of the udder of "I.S.S.H. ".

We will work with you to uncover and define the full measure of your F.I.S.S.H. capital.
