By next week’s post, the United States will have a new president. Interestingly, Donald Trump, is the first candidate to have run three times in a row, since Richard Nixon (who of course won twice, after losing to JFK). Longer-term, as we have re-iterated a few times, in the mid to long term, the president has little impact on the markets: far less than we might believe. You can email us your predictions, and if you haven’t seen it yet, here is the link to my video analysis on the subject: LINK

Markets have drifted lower recently; the view is that most are wanting to wait for the outcome of this election as an excuse to pause. In the U.S., central bank policy easing is expected to continue, but investors have tempered their expectations for how quickly rates will fall amid resilient economic data. This, in addition to shifting election odds, has led to rising bond yields.

The scrutiny being placed on the presidential candidates and their policies have been significant, but be mindful of the checks and balances that are built into the U.S. government structure that constrain any president from pushing through all of their proposed policies. Plus, whose to fully believe the word of any politician.

This weekend is also another time change: for those of you lucky enough to not have children (who are immune to these time changes) enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

Apart from all the election chaos, and with Halloween now behind us, we are now entering the time of year when giving and community are at the forefront of people’s minds. The holiday season inspires reflection on gratitude, kindness and charity, reminding us of the impact we can make on those in need. This week, our team, and a group of our RBC colleagues kicked off the start of the Holiday season by volunteering at the Scott Mission, helping provide meals and support to those in our community.

Together we prepared two days’ worth of meals for ~500 people, packaged 845 holiday gifts and ground approx. 35kg of coffee beans for distribution!
