Big Financial Detours: when you need a new map

When I ask them about it, my clients and prospective clients offer lots of different ideas around why and how they would enjoy being ‘wealthy’. Of course, ‘wealthy’ means different things to different people, but I do see a common thread around security and being free from money worries.

Being free means feeling unburdened. Being free means enjoying real choices. People have an idea of what wealthy will feel like, but a much-less distinct idea of what the number is or how they would actually get there. I created a Roadmap to Real Riches to help people SEE how they could achieve financial freedom. I made it as simple as I could, with 8 clear steps.

Seriously! It’s that easy. Or is it?

Because sometimes, you find yourself confronting a detour for which there is no map. Somehow you went from living in a beautiful home with a new car, closet of your favourite shoes, and a vacation south each year… to the prospect of renting a townhouse, taking public transit and staycationing.

How did that happen? A little something called life. A health emergency. A death in the family. A late-in-life lay-off. Divorce.

Any of these circumstances will set you back. And no matter how wealthy you WERE, if you’re unprepared for a big financial change, it will feel like a complete roadblock with you sitting in your car as the engine idles, eating up gas, with no way to move forward.

If you’re prepared… you’ll still face the roadblock, but you’ll have a map you can reach for to figure out a detour. And you can keep driving.

The key is preparation. And the Roadmap to Real Riches is a map that includes all the detours.

In upcoming episodes of my podcast I'm a Millionaire! So Now What? (listen & subscribe here) I’ve lined up some financial detour experts, including a practical interview next week with Katherine Cooligan, Regional Managing Director of Borden Ladner Gervais and a specialist in family law.

I’ll also be bringing you experts in estate planning this spring, whom you can meet face-to-face.
