Shop smart this holiday season

There’s no shortage of gift suggestions out there at this time year – the endless flyers, top ten recommendation lists and the online ads galore. But instead of being told WHAT to shop for, wouldn’t it be helpful to know HOW to shop well during the holiday season? Here are a few tips that I try to go by each year, plus some additional advice on how to make the most of online shopping.

  1. Set a spending limit. Don’t assume you have a limitless money pit to draw from. Do your best to abide by that limit. Avoid using credit whenever possible.
  2. Always remember it’s the thought that counts. Focus on meaningful vs. expensive.
  3. When asking for a gift receipt, always enquire about the return and exchange policy, so you can let the recipient of the gift know what they are able to do if the gift isn’t the right fit.
  4. Eat before you head to the mall. You’ll save time, money and calories!
  5. Support local. Heading to mall is the automatic instinct for many but don’t forget main street independents. They animate our neighbourhoods, often go the extra mile with customer service, and offer unique things you won’t find at the mall. And they need our support in order to stay in business!

What to know when shopping online

Shopping online is becoming more and more popular – and for obvious reason! You avoid the holiday shopping madness that the season often brings. Make the most of it by keeping these things in mind:

  • Make sure it’s a legitimate business. Shop with familiar companies. Look for the secure lock in the web browser (HTTP://)
  • Read reviews! Because you’re not seeing the item in person, you need to rely on the opinions those who already have.
  • Know the shipping and return policies
  • Comparison shop. It’s much easier online than going from store to store.
  • Consider setting up a credit card dedicated exclusively to online shopping
  • Be aware of any potential duty fees or taxes you may incur during shipping. You might end up paying more than you had planned on.

My main advice this year?  Shop sensibly and thoughtfully. You’ll thank yourself when Boxing Day rolls around.
