Over the past few weeks, my runs (and walks) have been accompanied by lessons from Don Miguel Ruiz’s book ‘The Four Agreements’.
Each one struck me in a different way - personally and professionally:
- Be impeccable with your word.
Words matter. How I speak to others - and how I speak to myself - can create connection or cause pain. - Don’t take anything personally.
As a recovering people pleaser, this one landed hard. Sometimes a business decision is simply a business decision. No need to take it personally. No need to react when someone else does. - Don’t make assumptions.
Clarity is kindness. Assumptions complicate. Asking questions and communicating openly keeps me out of unnecessary drama. - Always do your best.
And here’s the truth: my best changes with the circumstances. My best when I’m rested isn’t the same as my best when I’m tired. The point isn’t perfection - it’s showing up.
These agreements are simple in words, not always simple in practice. But out on the road, step by step, they remind me of how I want to live and lead.
Inspired by Don Miguel Ruiz, ‘The Four Agreements’.
