Good Afternoon,

Happy Friday. This week was a busy week here in the office. The markets gave us buying and selling opportunities as we watched volatility play out. The markets opened on Monday with a downturn caused mainly by fear of what was happening in China. I also had the opportunity to speak with several clients about the impact of Evergrande. Evergrande is a large Chinese property development firm that is at risk of default. This week's Global Insight Weekly discusses this subject in much more detail, with perspectives from our regional analysts. You can read the Global Insight Weekly on our blog.

The Current Account this week discusses the critical shortage of nurses in Quebec. It also talks about the Hudson Bay Company losing their outfitting contract with Team Canada to Lululemon. The Bay has held the contract to provide Team Canada's outfits for the Olympics for the past 16 years.

It already seems very long ago, but on Monday, Canada voted.  We will continue with a minority Liberal government. I'm sure over the next week or two, our analysts will have speculation on how this may impact you and your money.  Also this week, vaccine passports were mandated in Ontario, making it a requirement for service in the following indoor settings:

  • meeting and event spaces, including conference and convention centres
  • food or drink establishments with dance facilities, including nightclubs and restoclubs
  • restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments without dance facilities
  • facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities, including waterparks and personal fitness training
  • casinos, bingo halls and gaming establishments
  • concert venues, theatres and cinemas
  • racing venues

Please note, next Thursday many businesses will be closed for the new national holiday, the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Because the markets will remain open, our offices will have limited staff representation, but most of our transactions will be limited.

One of my wonderful friends/clients joined me for lunch yesterday. I conveniently left my Visa on my desk, and she had to buy. I owe her lunch. Please note we are starting to see clients again in person, and are happy to schedule phone meetings, WebEx meetings, or in-person meetings in our Oshawa office at this time.

Brenda will be out of the Office from October 12th to October 28th.She will be travelling across British Columbia for a mixture of business and pleasure.

Taylor's word of the week is Self-Aggrandizing, which means to promote oneself as especially powerful or important. This might have come up in some of the discussions surrounding the election this week.

Have a great weekend,

Brenda, Taylor, and Joel
