Senior Portfolio Manager
The potential for making a positive impact on someone’s life is infinite – this is what drove David to make a career change from the oil and gas sector to wealth management in 2008. In two short years at another firm, David got a lifelong lesson on how not to approach his new vocation: “At its core, wealth management is stewardship,” says David. “If that doesn’t inform everything you do as an investment advisor, in my view, you’re doing it wrong."
In 2010, David founded Grinde Capital Management at RBC Dominion Securities with a strong focus on exceptional client service through comprehensive wealth planning. “I’m always asking myself: How can we do more for our clients?” says David. “How can we make their lives easier?” This is a guiding principle for the team, and has produced many complementary value-adds for clients. For instance, Grinde Capital Management acts like a family CFO, coordinating all financial deadlines and a comprehensive tax package for each client’s accountant.
A Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation holder, David works with his team to meticulously craft and maintain exceptional investment models. Keeping in close regular touch with clients is foundational to Grinde Capital Management’s ability to continue to best serve their needs. “Portfolio management is central to achieving a family’s financial and personal goals,” says David. “We work tirelessly to exceed the unique requirements laid out through our financial planning process.”
In his off hours, David with his wife, Meghan, stay very busy with their four young children. David enjoys family time spent snowboarding or at the lake as much as he cherishes the opportunity to be involved in coaching the kids’ hockey and baseball teams.
Associate Advisor
Always eager to learn, Emily holds a Bachelor of Education as well as a diploma in applied information technology. But while she has dabbled in teaching and IT, Emily found the best fit for her exceptional people skills and attention to detail in wealth management, starting at an independent firm in 2005.
Having developed her skills and acquired industry credentials, Emily joined Grinde Capital Management in 2014. Emily is a first point of contact for our client families, expertly guiding them in all their queries, continually exceeding service expectations. Emily also keeps our team organized, ensuring that the administration of the structures and strategies we put in place for our client families is managed and executed correctly and on time. A key responsibility for Emily is relationship building, not only with our client families, but also with our extended RBC partners and external professionals, such as accountants and lawyers. “All of our client families are so great,” says Emily. “I feel satisfied at the end of every work day, knowing I’ve made someone’s life easier.”
When she is not working, Emily likes to spend time with family and friends, as well as staying active by hiking, biking, and snowshoeing. She is also an avid world traveler and volunteers with multiple organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross and the Calgary Drop In & Rehab Centre Society resume writing program.
Investment Associate
Money is a powerful tool, and its mechanisms have interested Andrew for as long as he can remember. Having attained a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from the Alberta School of Business in 2014, Andrew moved to Calgary to become a financial services manager at a major financial institution. Three years later, he made the move to RBC Dominion Securities as a business application specialist, teaching and consulting investment advisor teams on various software.
Andrew joined Grinde Capital Management in September of 2021, having impressed the team with his technological expertise and personable demeanor. “We experienced first-hand Andrew’s patience, attention to detail, and willingness to go the extra mile,” says David.
Andrew has studied the investment markets for years, both formally and informally, beginning with his ongoing journey as a self-directed investor in 2016 and earning the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation in 2020. As an investment associate, Andrew analyzes client portfolios, identifying and executing upon opportunities, bringing an energetic curiosity to his work. “Market research is like an investigation,” says Andrew. “There are so many moving parts, threads to follow.”
When he’s not working, Andrew can often be found spending time outdoors, running, biking, or working on his golf swing at the driving range.
Administrative Assistant
Chris is one to thrive in all environments, from the hustle and bustle of Beijing, his hometown, to the tropical calm of Saipan, the isolated American island where he attended high school. Chris came to Canada to study in 2016, and made his mark on Manitoba’s Brandon University, where he attained his Bachelor of Computer Science and received the Silver Medal for earning the top marks in his cohort.
To flourish wherever life leads him, Chris leans on four key personality traits: hardworking, goal-oriented, organized, and compassionate. In 2022, he brought these characteristics to Calgary and to Grinde Capital Management. In an administrative support capacity, Chris helps Emily keep everything sorted and organized for our clients, performing tasks like opening accounts. A self-described “numbers person,” he prides himself on precise and thorough execution.
Outside of work, Chris enjoys studying the markets and investing on his own. “I enjoy the analysis,” he says. “It’s all about continually learning.” For Chris, who is fluent in English and Mandarin, Calgary is a breath of fresh air. He credits the city for striking the perfect balance between metropolis and town. He loves to go on nature hikes with his wife, and they are both excited to lay down roots here.
