As challenging as the current US trade policies will be, one could argue “Tariffs” are a symbol of a need for change in Canada. There’s no dispute that our relationship with the US has been very comfortable in the past. The attached graphs highlight how US labour productivity enhancements and intellectual property investment have outstripped Canada and many other developed countries in the last 10 years. The message from these developments become even more compelling if we consider the $CDN deteriorated from $0.83US to $0.69US over the same period. The current GenAI evolution has the potential to offer countries like Canada an ideal launching platform for a deeper “value add” manufacturing & service strategy and an opportunity to close the productivity gap with the US.
