Ted Kalil
Senior Portfolio Manager
From reading investment books at a young age to crafting a Grade 7 term paper on the stock market, Ted’s early fascination with finance laid the foundation for the rest of his career. His interest led him to Queen's University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts and passed the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) before even graduating.
Ted started his career at a major investment firm, where his relentless drive and acute understanding of market dynamics led to him rising through the ranks from an administrative position – “I did it all,” he recounts. In 1995, Ted joined The Shapiro Group and now serves as Senior Portfolio Manager alongside partners John Kalaydjian and Adrian Brown. His longevity with our team means he has seen his fair number of industry and market changes, but, as he puts it, “The Shapiro Group’s approach and our values have remained steady through it all.”
As Senior Portfolio Manager, Ted oversees The Shapiro Group’s investment discipline, ensuring an all-encompassing and strategic approach is taken to financial management. He is a passionate advocate for financial literacy and can often be found on the phone with a client – providing them with timely advice, educating them on their investments, or just simply catching up.
Ted holds his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designations from the Canadian Securities Institute. He has completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s Investment Decisions and Behavioral Finance program, as well as the Harvard Business School’s Investment Management Workshop. Ted is also a frequent guest lecturer for McGill University’s Faculty of Management.
Outside of work, Ted enjoys spending time with his wife, Stephanie, and their three teenage daughters. The family enjoys a variety of sports and are regular participants in the 160-kilometre Canadian Ski Marathon. Active in his local community, Ted is the Chair of the Lower Canada College Foundation, a member of the Advisory Board at Camp Nominingue, and the former chair of Nordiq Canada. He and Stephanie also serve as co-chairs of the annual Cedars Cancer Foundation Dragon Boat Fundraiser.
