We recently sat down with Boston Marathoner, David Holder, Associate Wealth Advisor & Financial Planner to chat about his what inspires him to succeed in running and in business! This year marks David’s 16th Boston Marathon.

Q: When did you start running?

A: My first marathon was in 2004 and I probably started running a year and a half before that.

Q: When did you qualify for the Boston Marathon?

A: Fall of 2006 in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Q: How long does it take you to train for the Boston Marathon?

A: I typically start training after Christmas because the Boston Marathon takes place on the third Monday of April every year. I try to keep my training to 16 weeks.

Q: What does your typical week of training look like?

A: During the week, I devote around 50 minutes to running every day from Monday to Friday and fit in a long run (between 16k – 34k) on Saturdays. My long runs will take between 2 – 2.5 hours depending on the distance.

Q: Where and when did you run your personal best?

A: I ran my personal best at the Chicago marathon in 2016. It took me just under two hours and fifty minutes at around 2:49:20.

Q: Do you think there any parallels between running and business?

A: Definitely. Running involves planning and you must have an objective in mind, as well as a plan b – much like in business. A lot of it is just mundane. Showing up and doing what you need to do. One of the challenges about running is that when you’re getting older, you’re not getting faster (which can be discouraging to some), but the opposite is true when it comes to business.

In business, you grow and improve the longer you work towards your objective. In running, it’s important to be able to adjust your measure of success as the years progress. In running you want to get results, but there’s more to it than just being number one. In both running and business, there is much to be said about working hard and being persistent.
