Michael’s journey began in Scotland, but his roots in Canada run deep—he moved to Newfoundland with his family at just two weeks old, a transition that would shape his unique worldview. Raised in the close-knit community of Portugal Cove, he developed a deep appreciation for the island’s unique way of life—a way of thinking that is as much about family and relationships as it is about business.
After graduating from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1993 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Michael moved to Toronto and launched his career in the investment industry. His passion for finance led him to earn the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1998, a mark of excellence in the field.
Before joining RBC Dominion Securities, Michael honed his skills at Midland Walwyn, Merrill Lynch and CIBC Wood Gundy, following industry consolidation. A highlight of his career at Merrill Lynch was the opportunity to train at their prestigious center in Princeton, New Jersey, where he focused on advanced investment strategies for high-net-worth individuals.
Prior to his time at RBC Dominion Securities, Michael has had the privilege of living in many different countries, including the Philippines, Singapore and the Czech Republic. These experiences have given him a rich international perspective on investing, one that deeply influences how he builds portfolios for clients today.
With a blend of formal education and extensive experience, Michael excels in wealth preservation and growth for executives, business owners, professionals and affluent Canadian families. But for him, it is never just about the numbers—it’s about understanding what truly matters to people and aligning investments with their life goals and values.
Outside of his professional life, Michael is a dedicated husband and father of two. He enjoys cycling, spending quality time with his family and always looks forward to traveling, especially to his beloved home province.
