Good afternoon,

I’m starting today with this invitation to an online seminar (one of two I’m including today – both are good I think). Note the times are listed in Torontonian.

How to age alone and well. Jan. 24. It’s an interesting topic, and it might be worth a look – if not for you specifically, maybe with a loved one in mind. I’m actually very interested, even though and my wife is still with me – or at least she was this morning…

Ok, yes. I checked. She’s still there. Phew! Maybe see you online, though it’s a country-wide event. I’m the guy with the popcorn.

Solo Seniors:

How to age alone and well

Actionable advice to stay in control, secure, and connected

Wednesday, January 24, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. ET

The number of Canadians living to 100 and beyond is increasing exponentially. If you add to that Canada’s 48% divorce rate and women outliving men by 4.4 years on average, most of us will spend a portion of our senior years alone. That said, there is a difference between being alone and feeling lonely. While loneliness can be as unhealthy as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, aging alone can be fulfilling with the right planning and support systems in place.

Join us to explore the impact of loneliness on your mental, physical, and financial wellbeing and how to stay secure, in control, connected, and healthy if you are aging alone.

Next, this week’s Global Insights:

Can small-cap equities go the distance?

A rally in the closing months of 2023 highlighted the potential of U.S. small caps to generate strong returns. But since the start of the new year, the asset class has looked more like an also-ran. We explore whether small-cap stocks have what it takes to deliver wins for investors in 2024.

Regional developments: Canadian inflation rose at a faster-than-expected pace in December; U.S. consumer spending proves resilient, for now; Better UK inflation progress than meets the eye?; Deflationary pressure and property crisis persist in China
