Why Work Doesn't Happen at Work

My associate recently showed me this video that discusses why work doesn't happen at work. In this Ted Talk by Jason Fried, he discusses the issues that he finds of why people have trouble getting work done in the office. He touches on the fact that when people are asked where they get their best work done, it's normally: a place, location or room (i.e. a library), a moving object (i.e. commuting) or a time (i.e. early morning or late at night).

As Jason mentioned in the video, it is very hard in an office environment to have uninterrupted lengths of time. Between emails, meetings and office small talk, you get a series of "work moments" not work days. For me personally, if I want to get some things done, I need to close my doors and really focus on the task at hand. As a business owner, this video hit home because the more efficient my team and I work, the better the business will run.

Jason talks about how similar sleep and your day at the office is. Having two young children that normally disrupt my sleep, I agree that sleep and work are very similar because once you are interrupted, you lose your place in that process instead of picking up right where you left off. When it comes to work I often find myself saying, "now what was I doing." These moments of time that we spend regrouping take up large amount of our days and really hold you back from completing substantial amounts of work. This leads to more work done late at night or on weekends.

Please let me know if you have any tips or suggestions aside from the ones in the video that you find work for you and your team!
