Amazon wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for Bernie Madoff: Amazon.com might never have happened without Bernard L. Madoff. Jeff Bezos once worked at D.E. Shaw, the quantitative hedge fund. But he quit in the early 1990s to open the online bookstore that would make him famous. According to an article in Washingtonian magazine, Bezos ran his Amazon idea past Ted Leonsis, then AOL’s president, who would go on to act as a sounding board for the e-commerce entrepreneur. Eventually Bezos confided to Leonsis that he left D.E. Shaw because I had a competitor who was kicking my ass. That competitor was Bernie Madoff. So, Bezos told Leonsis.

For more aspiring tech moguls, prenups a prerequisite for marriage: The young woman in Monica Mazzei’s San Francisco law office was adamant: She wanted a prenuptial agreement. Never mind that the client had barely anything to her name. What she had was a bunch of startup ideas. She and her fiancé, who already had his own small tech company, signed a prenup with clear terms, Mazzei said: The spouse who has an idea starts a business ‘owns’ that business. It’s their baby. A few years later, Mazzei, a partner at Sideman Bancroft, was travelling through the San Francisco airport when she saw her former client on a magazine cover.

Forestry sector scrambles to recruit tree planters to sow millions perhaps billions more seedlings: It takes the stamina of an athlete to run up the side of a steep mountain the way Lann Dickson does. Nothing about it is easy, said Dickson. A lot of people quit in the first week or two, it definitely breaks a lot of people. The veteran tree planter zig-zags across the mountainside in Fraser Canyon near Boston Bar, B.C., dodging stumps and branches, with 300 seedlings tucked into pouches strapped around his waist. Without losing a beat, Dickson pierces the ground with his shovel and slings a seedling into the ground. Then he's off to the next spot he eyes several metres away.

Worry less, sleep better. Tools to get things off your mind: Nothing keeps us up at night like worrying about the little things. Did I remember to turn off the lights downstairs? Is it garbage day tomorrow? Have I paid the electricity bill yet? Will I get paid before the mortgage is due? Do we have milk in the fridge for the morning? The pace of day-to-day life and what feels like life’s increasing obligations can lead to stress and may even give some sleepless nights. Fortunately, a new crop of digital tools can help take care of many of those little worries. Sarah Baeumler, HGTV Canada star and self-proclaimed worry-wart, shared how digital tools have helped her wipe sleep-limiting worries off her mind, free up more time in her day, and multi-task in a more efficient and productive way.
