I just came back from a quick trip with my oldest, James, who graduated from Grade 8: we went to London and Paris for his first trip to Europe. Those who know me well know that I worked in London, and spent a year studying in Paris, so it was a great and proud time for me to introduce to him what I consider the two greatest cities in the world.

A few observations about the trip:

  1. The public transportation system in both cities is fantastic

  2. The use of downloadable apps to help navigate and provide real-time updates on Tube/Metro times is truly amazing.

  3. The ease with which travelers can get through borders, with the use of digital imaging and scanning of documents. Hopefully, Canada will soon follow!

This was the border control for Canadian travelers entering the UK. No interaction with any human: simply scan documents , and be on your way. “Brilliant” as they say.

The use of technology is certainly a game-changer. Last week, I was also at a training session with RBC DS.

One of the interesting themes was the discussions of the use of technology on our platform, to improve the client experience. We have seen a profound shift over the last few years, during Covid, and going forward with the digitization and many of our processes. Stay tuned for more information on future applications that we will be incorporating, which will further delight and enhance our client experience. Avril and I are also enhancing our communication tools, so by the end of summer, we will be having a few more methods of communication to reach out to you.

As the summer is upon us, to use another British expression, our Kingsmill Investment Miscellanea, will move to a “fort-nightly” schedule: which is a fancy way of saying every two weeks.

Wimbledon is also upon us, another reminder signaling the beginning of summer. I will wait until the next posting to provide my predictions...

One last British link for this week’s post:

This weekend is of course Canada Day, formerly known as Dominion Day, which was the formation of Canada into a single dominion within the British Empire. Since 1982 of course, this is now Canada Day. In the GTA, let’s hope the smoke doesn’t prevent the great fireworks.

Have a great long weekend!
