History of WD-40 Company, Inc.

I would be surprised to hear you don’t have a can of WD-40 in your home! It is not only a very handy and effective multi-use product, the company is also a great dividend grower. WD-40 Company has increased their dividend for 11 consecutive years. Recently they have increased their quarterly dividend from $0.67 per share to $0.72 per share with a total annual dividend of $2.88 per share.

WD-40 was created in 1953 when three employees of Rocket Chemical Company set out to create rust prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry. After 40 attempts at creating a water displacing formula they were successful in creating the very formula that is sold widely today. WD-40 stands for Water Displacement perfected on the 40th try.

WD-40 was initially used by Convair, an aerospace contractor, to protect the outer casing of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion. Some employees of the plant saw how effective the formula was and snuck some cans out to use at home. After seeing there might be a wider demand for the product and experimenting with putting WD-40 in aerosol cans, the product was sold on store shelves in San Diego in 1958.

"You only need two things in life: Duct Tape and WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use Duct Tape, if it doesn't move and should, use WD-40."

In 1969, the company officially claimed its name as WD-40 Company, Inc. Shortly thereafter in 1973, WD-40 went public and listed Over-The-Counter. On the first day the company was listed, the stock price increased by 61%. Since then, WD-40 has grown tremendously and now sells a variety of products to consumer and industrial markets including automotive, manufacturing, sporting goods, aviation, hardware, home improvement, construction, and farming.

WD-40 Company, Inc. has consistently grown over the years and continues to be a household and industrial name brand. They continue to grow their cash flow and reward their shareholders.
