Our CFA extraordinaire Darren Zalay just celebrated his 25-year anniversary with RBC Dominion Securities, so we took a trip down memory lane. Darren gives us a glimpse at what his days were like, and where the markets were this week 25 years ago.

We did a lot more mutual fund business back then as stocks were priced in fractions and odd lots were difficult to trade. For every mutual fund buy we filled out a blue ticket for a buy and a pink ticket for a sell. Not sure why we needed the paper as we then entered the trades on the computer. It was the start of the big run in technology stocks and an exciting time in the markets.
I was so excited when we got flat screen monitors. They were only 15 inches and didn’t weigh 50 pounds. We used odd things like fax machines and letterhead back then. All phones, almost no email. Computers were running Windows 3.1. Our trading and account-viewing software was still DOSbased and surprisingly we still use them today. When I was a trainer for Dominion Securities I was frequently asked why we still used these DOS relics and the answer was simple: they always work and they never break.
