Good morning all – A new season of the RBC Disruptors podcast was launched today. Moderated by John Stackhouse, Senior Vice-President, Office of the CEO at RBC (and former Editor-in-Chief, Globe and Mail), the program strives to showcase innovative thinkers and how they’re already shaping the next “normal”. In this first episode of the 2nd season, John hosts two guests - Janet Bannister, managing partner of Real Ventures and the first female founder and head of a Canadian Venture Capital firm (Kijiji) and Mike Serbinis, the creator of League, a Toronto-based company positioning themselves as a digital alternative to health insurance. He is also the driving force behind the MaRS Discovery District and Vector Institute.
Janet talks about her advice to her portfolio of companies to live to fight another day—and prepare to accelerate when that day comes. A former cross-country runner, she won races by accelerating up hills, when her competitors were slowing. Mike says more firms need to seize this moment by “thinking like a beginner.” And there’s no shortage of new beginnings: remote work, digital healthcare, tracing and tracking technologies. Serbinis argues we need to get behind the creators and founders of this next normal, to protect their IP, buy their products and invest in the talent they’ll need. “Focus on what you can control,” he suggests, “and create impact.”
You can listen to the new episode here. If you’d like to first check out the short second season trailer, click here. I found the trailer alone uplifting.
If you wish to subscribe, you can, directly on the RBC Disruptors home page, through Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
I hope you find it as interesting and inspiring as I did.
