For more than a few decades (I’d say since the introduction of VCRs, then CD players and so on), we’ve been warned that movie theatres and the film industry in general would suffer and then simply cease to exist. That’s why it’s so interesting to read (and hear) this recent RBC piece entitled, “The Pull of Crowds in a Plugged-In World”.
At the heart of the article/podcast is the summation that we still desire and even crave, in-person experiences – that all-important need for connection. This flies in the face of what many of us see out in the world – multitudes of people glued to their phone screens with no eye contact anywhere.
I encourage you to take a few minutes to listen to the latest RBC Disruptors podcast episode (imbedded in link above) where you’ll hear Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente (Co-Heads, TIFF) speak about how they’re dealing with the film industry’s challenges and how powerful a live audience is, in this age of all-things digital.
