This one hit me hard.
Don Miguel Ruiz, in his book ‘The Four Agreements’, writes: Don’t take anything personally.
As a recovering people pleaser, this is easier said than done.
Recently, I had to navigate a personal business matter with a longtime friend and business associate. In response to a long message, all I wrote was: “Thank you for your investment of time, your message, and sharing your thoughts. I appreciate your perspective.”
And that was enough.
The reminder was this: a decision can simply be a decision.
No need to take it personally.
No need to react if someone else takes my decision personally.
Still, my instinct was to explain myself at length.
To over-justify.
That’s the people pleaser in me.
But Ruiz’s words are true: Nothing others do is because of you. It’s a projection of their own reality, their own beliefs.
This lesson kept pace with me on my run:
Boundaries matter. Perspective matters.
Inspired by Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements.
