It can be exhausting…
I don’t know if it’s just me.
I don’t know if it’s truly a gender thing.
But it can be exhausting.
Expectations.
As a leader (Professional Expectations)
Take charge ➡️ but don’t be bossy.
Take responsibility ➡️ but let others get the job done.
Be confident ➡️ but don’t come across as arrogant.
Be assertive ➡️ but don’t make people uncomfortable.
Be ambitious ➡️ but don’t step on toes.
Set high standards ➡️ but don’t be too demanding.
As a parent (Family and Caregiving Expectations)
Be present ➡️ but don’t hover.
Support independence ➡️ but don’t let them fail.
Encourage success ➡️ but don’t push too hard.
Set boundaries ➡️ but be flexible.
Teach resilience ➡️ but always be there to catch them.
As an individual (Personal Identity and Social Expectations)
Be attractive ➡️ but not too attractive.
Be successful ➡️ but don’t flaunt it.
Have money, buy what you want ➡️ but don’t be rich.
Be happy ➡️ but don’t be too happy.
Laugh ➡️ but keep your voice down.
Be sad ➡️ but don’t cry.
It feels almost impossible to meet these expectations,
and yet… this is the way of the world.
Do you ever feel the same way?
Is it all in my head?
And more importantly - how do we find the balance?
Drop me a line and share your thoughts.
