Running Reflections: How far have we come?

As Women’s History Month continues, my Sunday run sparked some deep reflections.

We've come a long way, baby...

Or have we?

Women make up about 50% of the world's population but don't hold 50% of the roles in many professions, especially those that are higher paid, more flexible, and more respected.

Why is this disparity still a reality today?

Bias exists within us all; it's a human condition.

DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives aim to challenge these biases and open opportunities that might initially feel like ticking boxes. Yet, like any goal, sometimes starting with simple steps or "checking boxes" is necessary to maintain focus and prevent slipping back into old patterns.

Breaking biases is tough, similar to forming new habits.

Reflecting on my own journey with running, it wasn't until my mid-30s that I embraced it regularly, with ebbs and flows in my consistency. Setting a specific goal, like my half marathon race of October 2023, required a structured training plan. Checking those boxes and following a plan was crucial for crossing the finish line without injury and achieving a good time.

Adopting a growth mindset and recognizing how structured approaches can help us overcome barriers may not feel so restrictive when we use a growth mindset to open opportunities, challenge the status quo, and make incremental changes towards greater equality and fairness.

World!

Let's keep running towards that goal, together.
