June 2019

The sun is out and we have had some great weather here in the Okanagan. We hope that your summers are planned to be filled with relaxation and some family time.

We have decided to change the frequency of our newsletters, and you will be hearing from us quarterly, rather than our usual monthly newsletter. We are always available to chat, and of course update you on market conditions as needed.

Personal tax season is behind us for another year, which we are sure everyone is happy to focus on more enjoyable endeavors. We hope that our efforts here at the office made it as stress-free as possible for all of you. There are a few takeaways we gather each season, and we would like to share them with you.

We have noticed the use of secure email is a bit cumbersome for our recipients. As a compliance rule, we are not allowed to send out any account sensitive information without sending it via password protected / secured email, which is sometimes inconvenient on both ends. If you have RBC DS online access to your accounts, we can send you secure messages via the Communications tab once you log in. This is a fairly seamless way for us to send documents and receive instructions from our clients, and we have found great success when using this portal. Please give us a call, and we can get you started with online access to your RBC DS accounts. There are many valuable features and we would be happy to share these with you.

Another takeaway from this tax season is when you hold assets at multiple institutions and how that may add extra work with your tax planning. We would encourage you to consolidate your holdings here at RBC DS so we can serve you best.

This year’s survey will be emailed to all DS clients (who have an email address on file) starting the week of June 17. Clients will receive an invitation to participate in our survey which will include the survey’s web link and personal access password. The online survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Similar to past years, the client survey is 100% confidential and will be conducted by an independent research firm, Strategic Insights Inc. Clients who participate will have an opportunity to win a $5,000 vacation or a directed donation to a registered charity of their choice.

Reading fiction has been said to increase people’s empathy and compassion. But does the research really bear that out?

Summer Reading Recommendations

Looking for a great book to read or a podcast to listen to this summer? Below are a few of our suggestions.

Jones : Red Notice by Bill Browder

This is an exciting and fast paced read following the true story of Bill Browder - a Wall Street maverick who turned into an accidental activist. Corruption, Investing, Murder, Crime, Putin – could not put it down!

The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Ok, this one is for the kids or grandkids – and they will love it! Here’s how the book work - everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say…BLORK. Or BLUURF. Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again.

Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom

Over 10 years old but the life lessons stay true. This memoir follows a rekindled relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.

Natel : OPEN: An Autobiography by Andre Agassi

One of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

This novel focuses on 29 year old Eleanor Oliphant, a social misfit who becomes enamored of a singer she sees performing named Johnnie Lomond who she believes she is destined to be with.

Podcast: Conan O’Brian Needs a Friend

This weekly comedy podcast hosted by American comedian and talk show host Conan O'Brien. The podcast debuted in November 2018 and features O'Brien discussing friendship with comedians and actors in the industry.

Denise : Roses Are Red by James Patterson

In the sixth novel featuring protagonist Alex Cross, the homicide detective and forensic psychiatrist, tracks a mysterious criminal who calls himself the Mastermind. If you’re into thrillers, suspense, and crime then this book and all others by James Patterson are for you!

Where There’s Smoke by Sandra Brown

More frustrated passion, political scandal, and true Texas grit from Brown. This was an entertaining read!
