James Malone joined Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management (PH&N) in 1997 and became a partner in the employee-owned firm in 2001. PH&N joined forces with Royal Bank of Canada in 2008, and for the past 27 years, James has dedicated himself to providing customized discretionary portfolio management for private clients. His successful High-Net-Worth practice is based on a disciplined, financial planning-based process. It begins with a thorough discovery and identification of each client’s unique needs, objectives and constraints. A full understanding of this is expressed in a customized plan, which contributes to the creation of an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) – the blueprint for the construction and ongoing management of each portfolio. This discretionary management approach is ideal for investors who don’t have the time, inclination, or expertise to research and implement investment decisions themselves. James draws upon a deep and talented team of analysts and fund managers with RBC Global Asset Management (RBC GAM) at the core of each portfolio. RBC GAM is a multi-manager firm that includes award-winning PH&N Investment Management, RBC Asset Management and BlueBay Asset Management.
James graduated in 1989 from Queen’s University at Kingston, Canada with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honors. He obtained the Chartered Financial Analysts designation in 1994. Prior to working with RBC/PH&N, James started his career in financial services with TD Bank in a variety of management roles including Commercial and Private Banking, as well as Investment Management. He also worked as an analyst in the research department of investment dealer Burns Fry Ltd., and ran the Western Canadian operations of mutual fund company G.T. Global in Vancouver. In addition to his role as one of the firm’s senior investment counsellors, James is a former member of our firm’s Investment Committee.
James is active in the community and volunteers his time on several not-for-profit Foundation boards.
