Fondly known as “Mr. Ottawa,” John Bull was a respected industry leader whose integrity, humility, and dedication shaped the culture of RBC Dominion Securities and the broader investment community in Ottawa. Over the course of his 55-year career with the firm, John became known not only for his professional accomplishments, but for the strength of his character and the relationships he built along the way.
John began his career in 1970 and quickly established himself as a trusted advisor, wise mentor, and steady leader. His word was his bond, and he became known as someone clients and colleagues could rely on completely. With his calm demeanor, quiet confidence, and deep sense of ethics, John earned the trust of generations of clients—many of whom came to consider him a personal friend. He believed in doing right by people, not just in business, but in life.
Throughout his career, John held several leadership positions, including Manager of the Ottawa Main branch and Director of the firm during its time as a private company. He played a pivotal role in building RBC Dominion Securities’ presence at 90 Sparks Street—an office that continues to reflect the high standards and professional culture he helped instill.
John’s legacy includes more than the successful practice he built. It lives on in the advisors and colleagues he mentored, many of whom credit him with shaping their careers. He was endlessly generous with his time and knowledge, often offering guidance, encouragement, and a thoughtful perspective drawn from years of experience. His passion for the markets and for meaningful conversations never faded. He was curious, insightful, and always ready to share ideas with those eager to learn.
He also contributed significantly to the community, supporting organizations such as the Ottawa Hospital, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation. His commitment to giving back was both quiet and consistent—never for recognition, but always for the right reasons. At the firm, he initiated an annual holiday gift drive that has resulted in more than 1,000 toys being donated to children in need over the past 30 years.
