Wealth Management Solutions

BUILDING AND PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY’S WEALTH
Providing you with the specific services and solutions that will help you build and protect your wealth starts with the creation of a personalized plan that addresses your various financial concerns.

To help you implement your plan, we offer a number of specific solutions directly. In addition to our core investment management services, this includes a range of wealth management solutions designed to address specific financial, tax or estate planning concerns. We can also refer you to our colleagues at other parts of RBC to implement certain aspects of your plan, and co-ordinate with your external advisors (tax, legal) on other action items.

Enhancing your retirement plan

In addition to the full range of RRSP and RRIF solutions, we also provide specialized retirement solutions that enable you to build greater retirement savings, enhance your retirement income, shelter surplus assets from taxes and maximize your estate. These include:

Individual Pension Plans

Individual Pension Plans (IPPs) ideal for incorporated professionals and owner/managers who want to make greater tax-deductible contributions compared to a regular RRSP

Individual Pension Plans (IPPs) can offer significant tax sheltering opportunities to specific clients...in some cases as much as twice that of RSPs!

If you are new to IPPs and are wondering if they are right for you, here is the Acid Test:

  • The company sponsoring the plan must be INCORPORATED
  • The potential plan member draws T4 INCOME from the sponsoring company

The most common client interested in an IPP is the small business owner/operator of the sponsoring company. Other clients who may be interested are clients in partnerships of incorporated businesses, incorporated professionals and even clients who are executives working for an incorporated company that has agreed to sponsor an IPP on their behalf.

Top 5 things you should know about Individual Pension Plans:

  1. The IPP is an employer-sponsored registered pension plan set up for an individual and designed to provide maximum retirement benefits and tax sheltered contributions.
  2. If you are over 40, you can contribute more to your IPP than your RSP
  3. If your company was incorporated in 1991, you may be able to make past service contributions for the past 14 years
  4. All plan contributions, actuarial fees, investment management fees and interest on business loans are tax deductible for the plan sponsor (company)
  5. There are 19,000 pension plans registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) today and 6,500 of those plans are IPPs. Of that 6,500 more than 4,000 of them were opened in the last three years.

Insured Annuities

The Insured Annuity strategy represents an income retirement option that provides you with a guaranteed income for life, or a specific period, and a guaranteed return of the capital used to your beneficiaries, estate, or charity.

The strategy at a glance
An insured annuity strategy combines two products: a prescribed annuity purchased with non-registered funds and an exempt life insurance policy. The annuity would generate an income stream that would cover the cost of the life insurance premium and the tax on the annuity, as well as to supplement your income. At your death, the annuity payments stop and your beneficiaries receive the benefit from the life insurance policy tax-free.

The benefits during your lifetime
As a prescribed annuity benefits from preferential tax treatment the result is that during your lifetime you will benefit from higher income and lower annual tax from the annuity.

The benefits upon death
At death there are no probate or estate fees and your initial investment would be passed on tax-free. The main drawback of an annuity is the loss of your capital in the event of a premature death, as payments generally stop upon your death. An insured annuity eliminates this risk since an amount equal to your original capital is paid out to the estate, or designated beneficiaries, as a death benefit from the insurance policy that has been purchased.

The specifics of this strategy will differ based on your age, health, initial investment, current investment rates and your personal marginal tax rate.

Minimizing your taxes

Recognizing that it’s not what you make, but what you keep that’s most important, we offer a range of services to help reduce your family’s overall taxes. These include tax-exempt investing and family income-splitting through a Spousal Loan Strategy or the RBC Dominion Securities Family Trust.

Spousal Loan Strategy

A prescribed rate loan is one of the most effective and underutilized, income-splitting strategies available and is an excellent way to legally split income with your spouse.

The goal of this strategy is to take advantage of a lower marginal tax rate by shifting investment income (interest, dividends and capital gains) from the higher income earning spouse to the lower income earning spouse.

This strategy is achieved by way of a spousal loan at the prescribed interest rate in effect at the time the loan is established.

Investors who take advantage of this strategy will be locked in at the rate in effect at the time the loan is established, regardless of subsequent rate increases.

Family Trusts

The RBC DS Family Trust allows high-income Canadians to save taxes by earning capital gains in the hands of children or grandchildren that pay little or no taxes. Every child or grandchild in Canada who has no other income can earn up to a certain amount of investment income tax free every year subject to the income attribution rules. The RBC DS Family Trust can be established to take advantage of this annual opportunity while still providing the parent with access over the monies funded to the trust.

If you have low-income children or grandchildren, there are three major benefits of setting up a RBC DS Family Trust:

  1. Assuming your child or grandchild has no other income, they can earn up to a certain amount of investment income tax free every year due to their basic personal tax exemption.
  2. The parent or grandparent is permitted to loan monies to the RBC DS Family Trust so they will never lose access to the loan capital.
  3. Investment income earned in the trust can be used to pay for expenses that directly benefit the child or grandchild (e.g. private school tuition, post-secondary education costs, lessons, camps, etc).
