Ottawa DS branches support Special Olympics

The Annual Special Olympics Breakfast, brought together three Ottawa DS branches, Ottawa Preston, Ottawa Main, and Bells Corners as title sponsors, for their $5,000 donation through the RBC Foundation. They were joined by members of the Ottawa business community to honour and support the local Special Olympics athletes, volunteers and coaches. The DS branches heard of the event through Vice-President and Wealth Advisor Michael Cotter, whose younger brother had participated in the Special Olympics. Michael learned first-hand the significance of this organization, which supports children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities through various programs including sports to build confidence and acceptance, and wanted to spread its awareness. “This organization brings so much happiness and courage to young athletes,” said Associate Steffanie Senechal. “We like to contribute to this breakfast because it truly celebrates all those involved with this important charitable organization.”
At the breakfast, Michael was pleased to present the RBC Male Athlete of the Year Award to Jack Fan. Jack had a star performance in figure skating, swimming, and track and field, participating in both summer and winter Special Olympics. In 2016 he won a total of 13 medals, including eight gold, and has been selected to represent Canada at the 2017 World Winter Games in Austria. The funds received from this event will help offset training and travel costs for the athletes.
