Brian Montgomery

Vice President, Portfolio Manager

Brian’s interest in the stock market started as a 14 year old in 1979, when B.C. Premier Bill Bennett’s government assembled a group of troubled resource companies into one company and then issued five free shares of B.C. Resources Investment Corporation to every British Columbian. Following the price movements of these shares served to spark a life-long fascination with the capital markets.

In 1983 Brian became a board marker on the trade floor of the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) and eight months later at the age of eighteen was the youngest floor trader, ever, on the VSE.

Two years of exposure to Canada’s venture stock market was plenty, and he attended the University of Western Ontario for a BA in Politics and Economics, with summers spent at an investment firm’s equity trading desk, and upon the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) as a phone clerk.

In 1989 Brian joined a TSE member firm McConnell and Co. until the following year when that firm faced an uncertain future in the face of rapidly rising interest rates.

In 1990 he joined Richardson Greenshields of Canada as a private client investment advisor in Ottawa, Ontario. Many of our clientele joined us in those early days, and when the firm was purchased by RBC Dominion Securities in the fall of 1996, these clients welcomed the increased feeling of security of dealing with a chartered bank-owned firm.

Also in 1996, Brian was named a Vice President of RBC Dominion Securities and in 2003 he was asked to become a member of the firm’s exclusive Chairman’s Council.

Brian is a licensed Portfolio Manager in both Canada and the United States. He is licensed to trade options and derivatives and has earned his Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation.

He has also been awarded most the prestigious designation in the Canadian securities industry, Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).

Brian has resided in Ottawa for 25 years, and outside of his business he spends much of his free time driving his three teenaged children to soccer fields and arenas. He is also heavily involved in community recreation and various charitable endeavours outlined in the Community and Philanthropy section of this site.
