September 27, 2018 - Insights into the equity, fixed-income, currency and commodity markets from RBC Wealth Management.

Our final wedding of the season was the marriage of Keeton’s best friend since grade 9. Keeton did an awesome job (yes, I am biased) as MC and with his speech as best man. The reception was held at Puddicome House in New Hamburg. The food was excellent. As it turns out, the same chef works at the restaurant – and so Diane and I will definitely return for a dinner there in the near future. Most importantly though, the couple was tremendously happy and it was a great day.

This Past Week and more; Markets were negative last week with the S&P/TSX down -0.9%, the S&P500 @ – 0.5%, and the DOW @ -1.1%. International markets were mixed for the week, the month of September, and 2018 year to date.

The good news is that with a new Canada-US-Mexico trade deal agreed upon at the wire of the deadline last night; North American markets and the Canadian dollar (possibly more of a short term bump?) all opened very strong this morning.

In addition, even though the TSX was negative for September and consequently has dipped back negative for the year; US markets bucked the September historic trend and had a positive month. They are solidly on the plus side of the ledger for 2018 to date.

With North America appearing to settle its trade issues, the US-China dispute will likely re-appear from a very brief sideline as the big geo-political headline grabber. Keep it in perspective though, as it could take some time and be a bumpy ride before that one fully plays out.

Some of the other economic items our Chief Economist Eric Lascelles is keeping his eye on are;

  • China slowing but, still stimulating
  • US stocks not appearing to stop but, will the rest of world maybe play some catch up
  • Canada economy moving well right now
  • Could be housing softness

The Weekend/Weather; We have certainly been experiencing fall weather. As of right now, nature appears that it may co-operate with the long weekend. Temperatures look to move higher on Saturday for a few days.

Whatever the weather brings, I hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving celebration!
