We know that Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31 (this year, it falls on Sunday), but do you know how it originated? Fun fact: the tradition dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. According to History.com: “In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before became known as All Hallows Eve, and later, Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into into a day of activities we know today, like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.”

You can learn more about the history of the holiday in History Channel’s “Ancient Origins of Halloween” article here.
