COVID-19: How RBC Wealth Management is helping clients. Learn more
Our team is high-performing and award-winning, but most of all, we’re united in understanding that this profession allows us to achieve some very special outcomes for our clients and the families we work with.
Vice-President, Portfolio Manager & Wealth Advisor
After running a successful hedge fund, Michael realized that investment returns alone did not provide what his clients needed most: “My goal is to grow not just your portfolio, but your personal net worth and the value of your business while making sure that you have a true financial quarterback across a range of critical wealth management needs.” This has been Michael’s aim since he started Michael Yhip Wealth Partners, now an award-winning advisor practice at RBC Dominion Securities.
Michael started his career as an investment banker in the late ‘90s, advising companies and governments on their debt strategy and financing needs. He then went on to build RBC’s national interest rate risk management business for its commercial clients, which helped a significant number of public and private companies access better tools to help them manage their risks. But it’s when he started his own hedge fund–in 2006–that Michael began to recognize his ability to think differently, create value, and solve unprecedented business challenges. In 2011, he won a Morningstar Investment Award in the category of Best Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund for his performance during 2008-2011, one of the most difficult economic climates in recent history. In 2020, and as a Portfolio Manager, he again achieved exemplary investment performance, which his clients attest to Michael’s expert strategizing, execution, and honest communication during this difficult period.
Michael returned to RBC Dominion Securities and became one of the leading advisors in his cohort, earning him RBC’s coveted Donald J. Langill Memorial Award and, with it, the title of 67th President of RBC Dominion Securities’ President’s Club. This is one of the longest-standing awards in the Canadian Wealth Management industry, and past winners of this prestigious award are some of the industry’s most recognized and respected advisors.
The combination of dedicated study, significant practical experience, and continuous learning is what translates to superior outcomes for Michael’s clients. His approach is to start by understanding a client’s journey, building a strategy to secure their wealth, and then managing that wealth at every stage of the journey. He acts as an informed guide and key advisor to business owners with the most complex financial affairs.
Michael graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (B.Com - Honors) with a joint specialist in Finance and Economics and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Michael was also one of the early graduates of Singularity University (SU), Canada’s executive program that examines how key converging technologies will shape our future and the leadership challenges and opportunities we will face.
Michael and his wife, Meagan, live in Toronto with their two children, Ella and Isadora (Izzy). In his off-hours, he enjoys practising mixed martial arts (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), reading, traveling and cheering passionately for the Toronto Raptors. Michael has been involved with the community through his work raising funds for the Michael Garron Hospital Foundation, the West Park Hospital Foundation, and other charities.
His current passion project is bringing the story of Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair, who holds the record for most international goals in the sport, to life through an animated film.
Associate Wealth Advisor
Nick Banfield’s passion for finance was kindled at a young age, having been fascinated by his father’s work as a hedge fund manager. In 2013, Nick started his journey in the investment management industry between semesters at McMaster University, where he studied economics and business, interning as a junior analyst for two different hedge funds. Through those internships, Nick was able to identify that while the investment management side of the business intrigued him, what he wanted most was to create lasting relationships with clients.
Nick’s role on our team has evolved rapidly since he joined in 2016. Now leading many of our portfolio and wealth management review meetings as Associate Wealth Advisor, Nick credits his success to resourcefulness – the ability to get creative and dig deep to find innovative solutions for clients.
Along with other key wealth management partners internal and external to RBC, Nick provides our clients with comprehensive wealth planning to identify potential gaps in their path to achieving their goals. Nick also takes a senior role in helping execute asset allocation and investment decisions driven by Michael through the discretionary mandates entrusted to us by our clients. Nick thoroughly enjoys getting to know clients on a personal level and is aligned with our vision of providing our clients with an unwavering confidence in their wealth management so they can focus on their businesses and enjoy their lives to the fullest.
No day is ever the same as the last in the financial services industry, and that’s what Nick enjoys most about his work – there is always a new opportunity to learn. “We really manage every undefined financial challenge or opportunity that impacts our clients’ lives, which is rewarding and exhilarating.”
In his spare time, Nick actively plays ice hockey and feeds his lifelong passion for snowboarding by going on an annual heli-ski trip to the Rockies with his father. In the less cold months, Nick enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and dogs at his cottage in the Kawartha Lakes.
Louie Chen graduated from The University of Toronto in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Immersing himself in finance courses, he developed a fascination with the investment markets and the idea of “making money with money.”
A bright, passionate, resourceful business grad, Louie tried out a few industries before finding his home in finance. He formed a small consulting company with some of his fellow University of Toronto alumni, tried his hand at real estate, and eventually unearthed a passion for finance in a role where he supported investment advisor teams and learned everything he could about the industry.
Over time, it became obvious to Louie that he truly enjoyed interacting and building relationships with clients, and wanted to further develop his understanding of the investment markets under experienced mentors. To further his personal growth and career advancement, Louie took the required courses to be licensed by the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and is currently writing exams to become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
In 2019, an opportunity became available to join Michael Yhip Wealth Partners, and today, it’s hard to imagine our team without Louie. A licensed investment associate, he manages everything from team administration to financial projection analysis while learning and transitioning to be more involved with investment management. He’s a skilled problem-solver and takes a lot of pride in what we accomplish as a team. “No one else can do what we do for our clients. That’s an incredible feeling.”
Away from work, Louie is passionate about cooking and enjoys trying recipes from different cultures for his loved ones. He also loves traveling, and has a bucket-list goal to travel to every country in the world during his lifetime.
We create value beyond traditional wealth management in ways our clients – business owners, entrepreneurs, and highly-affluent families – aren’t expecting.
