Good afternoon,

It’s been a bounce-back few weeks in equity markets, despite today’s fed-wary foot finding fallback, and still-high post-2008 interest rates. This combination speaks to some interesting strategies which haven’t been available to us in more than a dozen years. (I won’t get into it here.)

For now, here’s a look at global financial highlights up to Thursday night.

Our weekly analysis:

  • A summer without the doldrums - Market activity often slows in the summer, but not this year. We assess the factors that have lifted U.S. equity indexes recently, and the market’s prospects in light of lingering economic risks.
  •
  • Regional developments: Focus turns to Canadian bank earnings; The Fed may dial back the pace of rate hikes; New UK prime minister to face low growth, high inflation; More stimulus expected in China.

With eyes fixed firmly on the fed, here’s a quick look ahead from RBC Economics.  It’s hard to parse data against inflationary expectations and thus interest rate policy direction.  Is good news bad?  Is bad news good?  Have a quick look here: Forward Guidance: Our Weekly Preview

And, in my ongoing outreach to insomniacs, here’s a link to a short 11-minute video from Eric Lascelles, chief economist RBC Macromemo

Good-bye Kathy. Tomorrow we lay to rest my dear sweet mother-in-law. A 99 year-old a survivor of the London blitz, Kathy was and is the much-loved matriarch of 13 children and more than 100 descendants. Though she witnessed German Luftwaffe planes shot down just above her in broad daylight, at night she couldn’t resist sneaking out of her bomb shelter to get a better view of the show. I couldn’t possible squeeze in all her adventures here, (and lest the stars fall from the sky, I’ll stop here, well aware I'm not allowed to be so fond of my mother-in-law!)…So…

‘till we meet again…

Enjoy your weekend.
