What does a family doctor and an Investment advisor have in common? No this is not the beginning of a rude joke. This is a serious question, and the answer is: quite a lot actually!
First of all your family doctor or GP has responsibility to his or her patients, and so do Investment Advisors. We have a strict code of conduct that ensures that we as your Advisors have to look out for your best interests. Essentially our positions as experts means that there is a standard of behavior that we must follow. We are here to take care of our clients’ finances, just like your GP takes care of your health.
Another way that Investment Advisors are like your family doctor is that we know a lot, but we can’t know everything. Just like your doctor, we know a lot about what you need to be (financially) healthy, and we can diagnose issues as they arise. The same way you wouldn’t want your GP to perform open heart surgery, you wouldn’t want your investment advisor drafting your will. We have a lot of in house experts who can help with anything from complex insurance needs, to helping you settle an estate. We are always happy to recommend professionals outside of the RBC family as well and know some great lawyers and accountants in town.
Investment Advisors are your consistent touch stone. We have your financial history, we know your family, and goals, and we connect you with the professionals both here at DS and externally who can help you in the highly technical areas of your life. The specialists we have access to include, Estate Planners, Insurance Specialists, Financial Planners, Lawyers, Accountants, Trustee services and on and on goes the list.
So, if you feel like you might need a financial check-up please give us a call. Even if we aren’t in a position to address your specific situation we can refer you to a specialist who can.
