Union Pacific Railroad was founded on July 1st, 1862 when President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act. Lincoln was an advocate to have a rail line that extended across The United States. The Union Pacific railroad has connected and united the country for over 150 years.
Building the railroad was an extremely daring and ominous task. The goal was to build the railway from Omaha to Sacramento which spanned two-thirds of the continent. Construction crews had to cross hundreds of miles of desert and go through mountains at elevations as high as 8,000 feet all without the help of bulldozers, rock drills, modern explosives, or modern medical facilities.
