“My formula for greatness in a human being is amor fati: that one wants nothing to be different, not forward, not backward, not in all eternity”. - Nietzsche

Good Mornin’,

What a beautiful weekend of campfires and fall clean-up! I was also fortunate enough this weekend to catch up with one of my best buddies in the business all the way from the Westcoast Victoria office….great to see you amigo!

So….we are cruising into a new month, and the first week of November is sure to be interesting, particularly with a US election on the horizon.

Global equity markets have been drifting lower recently, as some expectations for how quickly rates will fall have been a tad tempered amid resilient economic data. In addition to the drama around the looming election, bond yields have risen, yes, we are seeing interest rates tick higher.

As we look for opportunities, we are starting to see an encouraging trend of sectors outside of technology – such as utilities, real estate, and financials….contributing more meaningfully to U.S. stock market gains. This is good for us to see as it suggests markets are anticipating a reacceleration in earnings growth for stocks across these sectors in the coming quarters. Yes, growth ---- In fact, earnings growth is projected to be nearly 15% next year, far higher than it has been over the past few years. More importantly, it is expected to be fueled by several sectors which could mark a necessary and healthy development as it’ll suggest a broadening in growth with more companies and industries benefitting, providing a constructive backdrop for our portfolios.

With the U.S. election just days away, the uncertainty surrounding them is an exciting reminder to always be positioned and prepared for life’s uncertainties and to try to focus on controlling the controllable.

Both uncertainty and adversity are inevitable guests at life's relaxing campfire; we all encounter it at some point. Things rarely unfold as we envision, and it’s all too familiar to look back and lament choices made or events that transpired. As this week, like most weeks, will be filled with a whole host of impactful events that are outside of our control, I thought it fitting to introduce the philosophy of amor fati

Amor Fati

A lively philosophy that invites you to embrace life in its entirety—the good, the bad, the fabulous, and the flawed. It encourages us to accept and cherish every curveball life throws our way and ensure that we are always focusing on the elements of our lives that are, in fact, within our control…

  • attention
  • attitude
  • aspirations
  • actions

your mindset….

Amor Fati is an ancient philosophy, meaning “love of one’s fate. " It is rooted in Stoicism, a school of thought popular in ancient Greece and Rome. Stoics believed that true happiness springs not from material possessions but from living virtuously. Amor Fati is a delightful extension of Stoic thinking. It teaches that we should embrace all of life's moments, those that are within our control, and those that are not — joyful, painful, victorious, or otherwise—they are all essential threads in the rich fabric of our existence. Philosophers like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius were all aboard this train, believing that accepting our fate helps us synchronize with the universe’s grand plan.

Friedrich Nietzsche, a 19th-century philosopher, added a twist to amor fati. He suggested that we should not just accept our fate but embrace it so profoundly that we would be happy to experience each moment of our lives over and over again. The success AND the struggle….all of it.

Adopting an amor fati attitude means flipping our perspective on life’s challenges. Those inevitable struggles aren’t roadblocks but stepping stones toward growth and understanding. This perspective encourages a radical engagement with life, transforming inevitable challenges from pesky hurdles into essential building blocks of existence. By merging the Stoic teachings with Nietzsche’s flair, amor fati shapes a powerful ethos for personal greatness and inner peace.

Embrace the Amor Fati Mindset

Why adopt the amor fati mindset?

Simple: life will throw struggles your way, whether sizable or trivial. Life isn’t always smooth sailing— while hardship may evoke frustration and sorrow, we all need the ability to shift our perspective. Amor fati nudges us to let go of negativity and fully embrace what fate dishes out. Living in the past or drowning in doubts can blind you to the present’s beauty.

Instead of wasting our energy on trying to control the world around us, or pining for what could have been, consider this: What if everything is happening just as it should? This shift in perception can be liberating!

In this way of thinking, learning from our missteps is crucial; adversity often carries the best lessons in its unwelcoming arms. Instead of getting bogged down with negativity after tough times, amor fati nudges you to embrace your fate and everything it entails.

The Mindset and Your Life

Amor fati whispers, “Let go of regret; life unfolded as it needed to.” And framing your focus this way brings a liberating twist. With an amor fati mindset, you'll find it easier to let go and keep rolling forward gracefully. Now, let’s dive into some actionable ideas for incorporating this philosophy into your life:

  • Ditch the Resistance: Whether you’re wishing for better health, relationships, or careers, stop trying to control your entire environment, or beating yourself up over past choices. Accept, move forward, and channel your energy toward action
  • Flip the Script on Challenges: Embrace change—it might be the universe’s way of rerouting your path to something beautiful.
  • Harvest Lessons from Obstacles: Life’s road is bumpy, but those bumps often carry golden nuggets of wisdom for personal growth. Embrace your successes and your failures as stepping stones, sharpening your determination.
  • Ground Yourself in the Present: Breathe deeply and savor each moment. Go on walks, catch up with friends, or simply relish your food. Mindfulness leads to a happier life.
  • Spread Positive Vibes: Kindness and gratitude go a long way. Smile, compliment someone, or lend a helping hand. Embrace each day as an opportunity and a gift.
  • Practice Reflection: Self-awareness sharpens your ability to tackle life’s challenges. Reflect on your emotions, let go of what hinders you, and appreciate your current journey.

Embrace Life as Your Teacher

Ultimately, amor fati isn’t just about accepting life’s events; it’s about welcoming them as vital to our personal growth. Every experience is an opportunity to learn. This mindset fosters growth and helps you align with life’s rhythm.

Life’s trials and tribulations can be bewildering, but adopting amor fati primes you to truly live. This philosophy compels you to cultivate resilience, joy, and acceptance, transforming challenges into avenues for growth.

Embracing this philosophy opens up a path enriched with ethical growth, personal freedom, and greater life satisfaction. You’ll build resilience as you learn to celebrate failing and find joy amidst chaos.

So, as we head into the week, remember……

Your life can be a wild ride filled with unpredictable turns. Amor Fati equips you to accept this unpredictability with grace and a sense of adventure. Instead of focusing on elements out of your control, focus on moving toward beautiful possibilities.

Sometimes, the winding road leads precisely where you need to be. So let go, embrace your fate, and find joy in the journey that is uniquely yours.

Be well and enjoy the moments
