On March 13, 2022, the Ontario government ended its licence plate renewal / sticker fees.

 

What is being refunded?

• The cost of any stickers purchased over the past two years (March 1, 2020 to March 12, 2022).

What do I need to receive my Ontario Licence Plate Sticker refund?

• To get your refund, you must:
  • check the address on your driver’s licence. If you see:
    • your current address, you do not need to update and will receive a cheque in the mail
    • the incorrect address, update it now to receive your refund cheque
  • pay any defaulted fees, fines or tolls

My address is wrong, how can I update it?

• It is easiest to update it on the ServiceOntario website
• Alternatively you can visit a ServiceOntario location

What types of vehicles are eligible?

• Individually owned passenger vehicle, light-duty truck, motorcycle or moped for the period of March 1, 2020 to March 12, 2022.
• Vehicles registered to companies or businesses are NOT eligible. Heavy vehicles and snowmobiles are also not eligible.

When will I receive my Ontario licence plate sticker refund cheque?

• If the address on your driver’s licence is correct and you do not owe defaulted fees, fines or tolls, you should receive a refund cheque in the mail by the end of April.
• If you update your address or pay defaulted fines, fees or tolls after March 7, your refund cheque will arrive in the summer or fall (depends on when you do it)

How much is the Ontario licence plate sticker refund?

• The amount you will get back is dependent on when you last renewed and how much you paid.
• As an example:
  • In Southern Ontario, the licence sticker renewal is $120 for 1 year, $240 for two years
  • In Northern Ontario, 1 year - $60, $2 year - $120

Am I still eligible for the Ontario licence plate sticker refund if I moved out of the province?

• Potentially, you can request a refund for each 6-month part of your driver's licence fee.

• Potentially, you would need to contact ServiceOntario at 1-888-333-0049.
