On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump took office, and understandably, we have received many questions about what American tariffs could mean for the Canadian economy. In essence, Trump 2.0 is here. The good news, is that we have witnessed this movie before. of the best analogies I heard this week, was the comparison between Donald Trump and a snow globe.

A snow globe, when shaken, creates a whirlwind of activity, chaos, and spectacle that captures attention. Similarly, Donald Trump’s presence often stirs up situations that demand focus and provoke strong reactions, leaving people fascinated or polarized. Once the snow settles in a snow globe, it presents a serene, curated image, much like how Trump crafts a specific narrative or persona despite the turbulence surrounding him. The snow globe is self-contained, much like his tendency to focus on his own world, insulated from external critiques.

In both, the key is motion — without being shaken, a snow globe is just a static object. When motion presents itself, and a shaking of the snow globe, one can look through the chaos discover opportunities.
