Good Morning,

We have been working closely with our friends and partners at the Centre for Newcomers to help address the needs of our community. Since 1988, the Centre for Newcomers (CFN) has been a crucial resource for immigrants and refugees of all nationalities in Calgary. This past year, CFN met with almost 20,000 new clients, many of whom were women and girls from Ukraine and Afghanistan. Through our collaboration with CFN, we have learned of the high demand for feminine hygiene products and the extreme shortage facing our community.

Why are Feminine Hygiene Products in such demand?

  1. In poverty, Hygiene Products are perceived as a luxury.
  2. Cultural reasons: In some cultures, women’s need will be at the bottom of the list and put behind the need for food, shelter, clothing, and needs of children.
  3. Lack of access to financial support: refugee claimants and asylum seekers have to wait a few months to get low-income support.
  4. Intersectionality: all forms of inequality are mutually reinforcing. Therefore, the more intersections these individuals face, the more barriers will prevent access.

Therefore, please join us and support our Feminine Hygiene Product Drive at the Centre for Newcomers on April 29, 2023, from 11 am – 2 pm. All feminine hygiene products will be accepted and Shannon, Brett, Tom and I will be on hand with the Centre for Newcomers Team to welcome you and your donation. Stay for a cup of coffee, enjoy a tour of the facility and learn how the Centre For Newcomers creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to realize their dreams and participate fully as citizens.
