Recreational cannabis will become legal October 17th but does that make it a responsible investment?

The debate around the legalization of recreational cannabis has been as volatile as Canadian cannabis stocks themselves. While it has been decided that recreational cannabis will become legal this month, the debate about whether or not to invest in cannabis companies is still going strong.

I wanted to share this paper, Investing Responsibly in Canadian Cannabis, for its view on the debate through a responsible investing lens. The paper compares medical and recreational cannabis companies to companies related to tobacco, alcohol and prescription medication. It also highlights and reviews the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks associated with investing in these companies.

Responsible investing and its increasing traction is something that I have written about often (recent posts here and here). The paper is a good read for anyone deciding whether or not cannabis will be a part of their socially responsible portfolio.
