I picked up a copy of a new book about essential financial concepts for youth recently.  It was written by Noah Booth, a young high school student from Kingston Ontario.  The book is broken down into different lessons in each chapter covering the following topics:

  • Earning & Spending
  • Saving
  • Your Future
  • Introduction to Investing
  • Taxes
  • Credit Cards & Debt

Every young person should at least gain a basic understanding of each of these concepts and this book is a good first step.

Just for Fun – Teach your kids about money early and make it fun with these ideas

  1. Play Banker – using Monopoly money for the weekend the kids will ‘buy’ things like meals, outings, movies or playtime.  They can earn extra money doing things like extra chores or donating old toys.
  2. Play board games like Monopoly or The Game of Life
  3. Build a shopping list – use flyers from the newspaper the kids get to cut out and build a shopping list and create a food plan.
