Happy Friday from BMWM!

We have decided to include our RRSP and TFSA newsletter this week. You will find that both on our blog and linked in our weekly email.

Today, the Current Account (click here to read) features New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stepping down as of February 7th, Microsoft laying off 10,000 workers, the Kraken COVID subvariant spreading fast across North America, and Florida orange growers harvesting the smallest crop in 90 years.

News for this week include scientists being closer than ever before to taming lightning bolts. A group of international researchers successfully used a laser to guide lightning in an outdoor environment; previous attempts to do so had repeatedly failed. Lightning causes thousands of casualties, forest fires, power outages and billions of dollars of infrastructure damage each year. Researchers in Switzerland used a laser to shoot 1,000 high-energy pulses per second near a telecom tower during six hours of thunderstorm activity and were able to divert four lightning strikes. Further work and investment is needed before the technology can reach commercial scale.

Taylor’s word of the week is sitzmark, meaning “a sunken area in the snow marking a backward fall of a skier”. For example, Matty made a sitzmark on a large hill as he has no skiing experience.

Have a great weekend,

Brenda, Taylor and Matty
